“That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don’t give it the time of day. Don’t even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time—remember, you’ve been raised from the dead!—into God’s way of doing things. Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God.” Romans 6:12-14 MSG
I realized that our attitude when it comes to sin should be like Dobby. He was a houself. He was slave to whatever his masters want him done. He doesn’t have a choice but to obey. Even if it leads to his own destruction. But Dobby didn’t remain as a slave. He is a free elf. Because he had a savior, Harry Potter. And there’s no turning back.
Dobby was proud of his freedom. He was proud of his savior. And because he was free, he acted accordingly. He no longer allowed himself to be bossed around by his old master (in our case, sin). But he didn’t just silently ignore or turn his head away from his old master. He was rather active in exercising his freedom. He does not have his eyes downcast in defeat scared of being enslaved again. Because he knows, he is fighting from a position of victory. And that his savior got his back.
We should be like Dobby in facing our sins and exercising our freedom. We have been set free. There’s no reason for us to act defeated. We should be confident of the grace and power God has given us to overcome it because like Dobby, we are also standing from a position of victory.
All your lives you’ve let sin tell you what to do. But thank God you’ve started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom! But now that you’ve found you don’t have to listen to sin tell you what to do, and have discovered the delight of listening to God telling you, what a surprise! A whole, healed, put-together life right now, with more and more of life on the way! Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God’s gift is real life , eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master. Romans 6:22-23 MSG
